The Essence of Gita in just two words

Lord Krishna says only two words in the ‘Gita' . These two words are not easy for people to understand and that is why the ‘Gita' is in the form of a large text. Then in order to understand the ‘Gita' , people have written commentaries on it! Lord Krishna himself has said, “Only one in a thousand will be able to understand at the gross, superficial level, what I am saying in the ‘Gita' . Out of one thousand that understand the gross meaning of the ‘Gita' , only one will be able to understand it's subtle meaning. Out of the one thousand who understand the subtle meaning of the ‘Gita' , only one will be able to understand the subtler meaning of the ‘Gita' . Out of one thousand who understand the subtler meaning of the ‘Gita' , only one will be able to understand it's subtle-most meaning.” Only one will truly understand what Lord Krishna is saying. Now who amongst this population of three and a half billion people, will qualify to be that person?

Whatever Lord Krishna wanted to say, He tried to say it in only two words and only the one who has become Krishna himself, can understand these words and explain them; no one else. Today, ‘I myself', Krishna have personally come, so get whatever work you want done.

What is Lord Krishna saying? When someone dies, do people not say, “The one within is gone”? What does that mean? That is the ‘main thing', the entity that has left is the Atma, and that which is left behind, is the ‘package'. That which you see with your physical eyes is the packing and within is the ‘real thing', the material. There are varieties of packing. There are packing of trees, packing of donkeys, packing of men and women; but within is the pure ‘thing', which is the same in everyone. The packaging can be of any kind, it can even be rotten, but a merchant does not care about the packing. He will check to see whether the merchandise within is fine or not. Similarly, we should do the darshan of what is within (the Soul) in a person.

Lord Krishna says, “Recognize that which is within. It is me, Krishna himself, and you will find the solution.” Otherwise, you will not get anywhere even if you sing slokas from the ‘Gita' for a million lifetimes.” There is ‘package'(the non-self) and there is ‘substance'( the Self), and the essence of what Lord Krishna is saying lies in these two words. However the intellectuals try to make sense out of the ‘Gita' and write books on them. The main thing is that they do not know how to extract the essence from the ‘Gita' and they have written commentaries and criticisms about it. They do it with the arrogance of their own understanding, with the intent of making a name for themselves. Otherwise, these two words are filled with the inner intent of Lord Krishna.

In the ‘Gita' , the Lord has said to study (do abyaas ), but today they have studied the ‘Gita' so much that they have turned their abyass into adhyas (a wrong impression) of the ‘Gita' . He had told people to study ‘Gita' in order to get rid of the wrong impression, but instead their study of it leads to the wrong impressions.

Questioner : What is the stitahpragna state? Is it same as pragna (the direct light of the soul)?

Dadashri : Stitahpragna is the lowest (spiritual) state, but people believe it to be a very high one. It is a great achievement to awaken the pragnashakti (the direct light of the soul). It will constantly alert you. It is the grandeur of the Atma .

To have no doubts in the belief of, “I am the doer,” is ignorance of the Self. To have doubts about your doership, whether you really are the doer, is the state of stitahpragna and when the ‘I-ness' of doership goes away, is the state where pragna arises.

Questioner : Please explain stithapragna .

Dadashri : It is a state in which one finds comfort and joy in only the state of ignorance ( agnan ) and becomes entrenched ( sthita ) in that state. If one becomes agitated and unsteady in the state of ignorance then we know that he has progressed. What does he progress to when he becomes unsteady in the ignorance? He progresses towards pragna.
