Questioner: But what are Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh that are described in the scriptures?
Dadashri: These are idols that have been placed to strengthen the prakruti. Vishnu is rajoguni (passion, desires), Mahesh is tamoguni (lethargy, unawareness), and Brahma is sattvaguni (goodness, awareness). People have installed idols to strengthen these three gunas (attributes). So by worshipping these idols, these three attributes become stronger but these guans gradually get destroyed in time.
And Mahadev - Lord Shiva is for suppressing all the three gunas, (sattva, rajas, and tamas).
Sattva guna is Brahma! What is sattva guna? All the ascetics who have turned towards the path of the Lord are in sattva guna. Who are in the rajo guna? These are people who cannot remain still, not even for ten minutes. It is as if they have ants in their pants. They work, work, and work all day long. Have you ever seen such people? Those who work for hours and cannot rest even for few minutes fall in the category of rajo gunas.
Those who are immersed in passion and desires and don’t work, are of tamo gunas.
Questioner: What relation do the three gunas, sattva, rajas, and tamas have with the tatvas (the eternal elements)?
Dadashri: Of what use are these three gunas to us? They are gunas of the prakruti and they are temporary, whereas the elements are permanent.
There are principal Devas for each of the three gunas. Those who need those gunas can worship the appropriate Devas; Brahma, Vishnu or Mahesh. That is all there is to it, nothing else.
Questioner: So are they considered part of the Devas?
Dadashri: Yes! But they are the principal Devas of the corresponding gunas. Shiva is for the for the tamo or tamas gunas, Vishnu for rajo gunas and Brahma for the saatvik guna. So when you worship these Devas, their corresponding gunas will increase within you. However, ultimately you will have to know the Atma.
Questioner: Then there is no point in worshipping Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, is there?
Dadashri: There is a point. Should one not strengthen his prakruti? He can progress further if his prakruti is strong.
